CRACK-DOWN ON ILLEGAL CABLE THEFT
The Municipality’s Metro Police arrested 25 people this afternoon after illegal electricity connections were discovered crossing the new Dumisani Makhaye Drive, next to Siyanda Informal settlement and Newlands West.

These connections were submerged in dirty water, which made them even more dangerous, as kids in the nearby informal settlement of Siyanda use this road as their playground. Dumisani Makhaye Drive is also a busy road, with a high level of pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

The Municipality’s Electricity Unit was immediately called in to disconnect the wires.

Upon seeing this sight, the Head of the Metro Police, Commissioner Eugene Nzama, felt that public safety had been compromised and had to act decisively.
